A Few Ideas For Mother's Day Gifting

By Carleton Varney- Special to the Palm Beach Daily News

Mother’s Day is such a special day, isn’t it? It offers us a chance to honor the moms who do so much for others and to remember those who are no longer with us.

Mom was always there for my sister, Vivian, and me, and although she is in the heavens, I’m sure she knows she was deeply loved — and still is!

On a practical note, for many, Mother’s Day means gift giving, and I offer here a few suggestions.

Let’s start with beautiful bed linens and comforters. Palm Beach is well known for Kassatly’s, the oldest store still in operation on Worth Avenue. The shop offers lingerie, linens, towels and placemats of the highest quality. Drop by the shop and enjoy the experience. You’re sure to find something Mom will love.

While you’re on the Avenue, may I also suggest a stop at the Leta Austin Foster Boutique in Via Mizner? Leta is a super decorator and has been a favorite for homemakers — on the island and off — for many years. My late wife, Suzanne, the mother to my three boys, always sang Leta’s praises.

The shop is filled with books, glassware, linens and other items that Mom would love. I bet you won’t leave the shop without a gift or maybe two — perhaps a special home fragrance might be just what you’re looking for.

And speaking of fragrances, you can’t go wrong, of course, with a bottle of Mom’s favorite perfume, whether it is Chanel No. 5, Chloe or Givenchy, to name just a few options.

I love the scent of gardenia and lilacs so when I have guests, I always place a drop of one of these scents on their pillowcases. It’s a small thing, but guests over the years have told me how much they appreciate the gesture.

If you are still having trouble deciding on a gift, don’t forget that flowers are never out of fashion. I suggest beautiful pink roses. Who doesn’t love pink? I certainly do.

Mr.Varney, I can not wait to see your hospital room that I know you will decorate after spending a month in the hospital. Please share your ideas and glad to know you have recovered. Can not wait to see the colors that you will chose!

    Dear Carleton,
It is my mother’s day wish that you and your firm would decorate and design hospitals as l believe reading Dorothy Draper did. When my mom was dying
at a non descript hospital , l told her she was too rich and too beautiful to die there. If you would have designed that hospital room and hospital
gown it would have been a solace, a slice of heaven.
I am waiting until her pink peony garden blooms until
I go up north to my cottage where l have used your colors Nancy Reagan Red, Grand Hotel Geranium Pink and Dorothy Draper Pink to bring happiness back into my life. Your colors make all the difference.
